SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Some professors at the University of San Francisco have devised a way for you to find out if there is human trafficking being investigated anywhere in the world, including your own neighborhood. The State Department estimates nearly 20,000 people are trafficked in this country every year and 27 million around the world. Human trafficking is where people are basically forced into slavery as sex workers or forced labor. The Web site SlaveryMap.org and its creators are encouraging students to become investigators.

1. The U.N. estimates that one to four million people are trafficked worldwide each year.
2. Human trafficking is the third most lucrative criminal activity in the world after illegal drugs and black-market guns, generating $9.5 billion in annual revenue.
3. In 2005, the International Labor Organization estimated that there were 9.5 million victims of forced labor in Asia alone.
4. Women constitute 70 percent of the world's 1.3 billion absolute poor, those living on less than $1/day.
Human trafficking is an international problem involving almost every country in the world as a source, transit or destination country. In addition, many people are trafficked within their own country.
